Take the Long Way Home by Supertramp Lyrics Song Info List of Movies and TV Shows

A wife, a couple of kids and a well paying but unsatisfying job. When he was younger he had great dreams and aspirations and thought he would be great, powerful, achieve something, only to find that is life has turned out to be ordinary. I'm quite sure about the meaning and it's different than the comments I saw here. I think it's about realizing what is truly important in life. The core meaning of the song to me is that you don’t have to struggle to do or be anything.

Has anybody ever considered the possibilty that the song is about the effects of living life on a stage? The pressures to constantly be "ON", and very rarely having the chance to be something else? So many artists find themselves stuck in the rut of constantly cranking out the same thing time after time, never allowed to be something else. This song reminds of me of grown-up people I know who have been mild drug users all their lives, you know, true rock 'n' rollers, and well, by staying youthful, never really became anything more than mediocre. Yet there is something to be said for taking the long way home, you get to see a lot more along the road, and it's always interesting.

What year did supertramp release their song take the long way home?

The Isley Brother's song, "Contagious," peaked at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100. This meant that the band of brothers became the first group to score a Top 50 hit in six consecutive decades on the chart. This song appeared uncredited, along with "Child of Vision" (also from the "Breakfast in America" album) in the 1984 Richard Lester directed film, "Finders Keepers". The movie starred Michael O'Keefe ("Caddyshack") and Lou Gossett Jr. I don't know why this song has always struck me as being about suicide for some reason. In essence, it's about the ups and downs of coming of age, and ultimately growing up with some of the successes and failures we each make.

Nowadays, we have the Supertramp camp saying Roger is stealing Supertramp songs for his use on tour. Roger wrote his songs and Rick Davies wrote his songs - it would be nice if the side could come to a reconciliation but it doesn't look promising. Anyway, enjoy the songs, they are amazing works of art.

Take The Long Way Home (ROGER HODGSON) – LyricsBlast

He has found that taking the long way home from whatever it is that he spends his day doing does give him some surcease from sorrow, when he can day dream, imagine he is living the life he had planned. And it delays finally arriving at home where facing his wife will destroy that fantasy. That song would have amounted to a bubblegum smacking transistor radio sing along if not for the harmonica playing of Rick Davis and all those other quiet geniuses happy to be buried silent in the group. I can absolutely understand why he turned down the 5 mil offer. Putting the song in a commercial would greatly cheapen the song and it's message, which is loved by millions of people around the world. It would be like hanging the Mona Lisa in a used car salesman's office.

Again it's ambiguous - 'if you're not around' means… you're dead or you couldn't settle down - you couldn't take it and you're off looking for things that are more important. I remember having a lot of fun writing it but never really having a clear picture of it. It was more… often when I write songs, I go by gut instinct. I had always imagine this song as being two guys friends whom decided to get away from home to do some activity together. The narrative of the song would by his friend who knows him well, tries to console him, as best as a guy could.

Who wrote the Supertramp song Take The Long Way Home?

I'm so very glad that the band didn't sell out and let Greyhound use this song for their commercials. This album is one of my all-time favorites. It's about someone who has success, but hasn't really acheived anything. As he's driving home from work, he literally takes the long way home and sees some of the things that he could have been if he hadn't sold out for money or power or whatever. Really don't like this song or the entire album. They did much better in previous albums.

Nor can I decipher what the metaphor "part of the scenery" means, as well as the line "All the greenery is coming down, boy." The lyric 'there's no way out' is the feeling this guy has being stuck in a marriage he's unhappy with. This would be a guy who feels 'part of the crowd' when he's out on the town. He's in the spotlight - meeting new people, having fun, and meeting new women. The guy is narcissistic - he considers himself a Romeo - a lady's man. This song is basically the soundtrack to my life....I love it!

However he realizes his prime is gone he's old news. Alx, I always took the "part of the furniture," line as a reference to the decline of the relationship. My guess is that she's tired of him and is sleeping around with someone else hence why she just ignores him.

In this case, the precipitating event is that he is walking own the street one day and an iron girder from a skyscraper building project falls and just misses him by inches. That causes him to rethink his life and split right at that very moment. I've never been a fan of Supertramp. This is a whiny song, I don't care for the vocals or the lyrics.

Mainly she just doesn't love him anymore; she's there to either to leech off of him or for the kids sake. Hence why he feels he's part of the scenery he's just there pretending. I picture a guy not wanting to go home to his suburban life and wife and taking the long way home so he doesn't have to be there. When he got married everything changed. Now he's part of the scenery - he's the joke of the neighborhood .

I think those final few lines paint a happy ending - makes it feel to me like a second chance or second wind. The subject has run off to do what they want to, they're "not around" for the same ol' stuff because they took the long way, thought about it, and made a decision. WhatSong is the worlds largest collection of movie & tv show soundtracks and playlists. Roger Hodgson sings about how after so much time on the road, you want to take the long way home, either due to homesickness or not having reasons to return (why return and feel diminished by an ignoring wife?). Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and Lyle Lovett are just a few of the artists who have looked to Clark for insightful, intelligent songs.
